The second looks like the typical unicode text decoded as ascii, but my player is set to unicode. The first is different. Anything odd on your end? Anyone else experiencing this?
Mplayer2, vlc and xine all show the same here.
Mystery solved. The problem is in the .ass subs. Apparently they\'ve been converted to unicode twice. Follow me here:
The first problem line, \"Let\'s say a Â¥1,000,000 is 1 cm.\", contains the yen symbol. The utf-8 code for that is 0xc2 0xa5. However, if decoded as ISO 8859-1 AKA latin-1, those two bytes correspond to characters \"Ã
Char limit? Don\'t want to spam more, so in a nutshell: subs are in utf-8, some program thinks they\'re in latin-1 and decodes the wrong characters, then said program saves the wrong characters into proper utf-8. 0xc2 0xa5 (Â¥) becomes 0xc3 0x82 0xc2 0xa5 (Ã
Huh, strange. We\'ll look into where the issue actually happened. All my text editors are set to standard UTF-8. Anyway, thanks for the heads up.
